The Network Women’s Program (NWP) of the Open Society Institute, the Institute for Social and Gender Policy (ISGP), and the International Gender Policy Network (IGPN) in collaboration with a network of partner organizations, including the Open Society Institute Assistance Foundation-Armenia, the Open Society Institute Assistance Foundation-Azerbaijan, the Open Estonia Foundation, the Open Society Georgia Foundation, the Feminist League (Kazakhstan), the Soros Foundation-Kyrgyzstan, the Center for Equality Advancement (Lithuania), the Women’s Leadership Foundation (Mongolia), the Open Society Institute Assistance Foundation-Tajikistan, and the Ukrainian Women’s Fund are honored to introduce the new collection of seven documentary films, Gender Montage: Films from Post-Soviet Space.
The Gender Montage: Films from Post-Soviet Space documentary film collections aim to raise awareness and to empower activists with new tools to advocate for women’s rights and gender equality. The films address some of the most acute yet overlooked problems in each post-Soviet country: women’s human rights violations, the impact of institutionalized and ingrained inequality, and the effects of gender stereotyping. They expose hidden or controversial subjects and make us think about the need for more effective strategies for women’s self-expression, empowerment, and gender equality.
The first Gender Montage collection, consisting of nine films, was released in 2003. The films influenced national legislation and policy; serve as training tools for local and international organizations including UN agencies; are used in over 500 universities and resource centers; were recognized by more than 50 film festivals; were broadcast across the entire region on television; and received strong reviews from film critics.
