ENGLISH: 2006-2007 Activity
  • In April 2006, our foundation became one of the few women's NGOs to join the Russian Governmental Interdepartmental Commission for Assuring the Equality of Men and Women in the Russian Federation. In December 2006, our foundation was selected as a partner organization of the Russian Forum of Donors, where it is the only organization that integrates a gender approach into the work of the Russian donor community (which includes 43 foreign and Russian donors today).
  • In March 2007, we are concluding the major interregional project "Public Oversight over Pre-School Institution (PSI) Transformation during Municipal Reform Implementation: a Tool for Protecting Disadvantaged Women" with the support of Open Society Institute – New York. This project has allowed women's NGOs in the regions of its implementation (Krasnodar Territory, Chelyabinsk Region, St. Petersburg, Leningrad Region, Ust-Ilimsk, etc) to inform women about the violation of their right to a job and to organize cooperation and dialogue with the women's community – parents and women workers in education. One of the project's results was the limit imposed on the cost of services of preschool educational establishments from January 2007. The Council of Parents of the Chelyabinsk Region was established during project implementation for furthering parents' interest in preserving and improving the accessibility of preschool educational establishments, showing the topicality and importance of this theme as well as the ability of women's NGOs to engage in dialogue with the local community. This project showed that discussions on topical issues that evoke the concern of the local community tend to develop into initiatives that address the causes of these issues if the civil organizations that bring up the issue manage the process correctly. In the course of discussions of project results, regional women's NGOs expressed their concern with other topical themes relating to women's rights violations and also showed the effectiveness of uniting the women's community around topical issues. At the final event, participants proposed to create a national movement called "Angry Mothers."
  • In May 2006, our foundation held the open grant competition "The Year 2006: A Thousand Women's Testimonies and Stories. Recommendations for Improving the Status of Women in Russia." Its aim was to bring social problems involving discrimination against women to the attention of society at large and to make government and society aware of women's status and women's rights violations in a transforming society. 167 applications from 87 cities in all of the country's regions were submitted to the contest, making it possible to bring the database on Russian women's groups up to date and to map out women's rights violations. Today, the results of the 15 projects that we supported provide unique material for UNDP experts that are drafting an alternative report on CEDAW compliance in Russia.
  • In early 2006, we issued the second documentary collection on DVD on the status of women in CIS countries in the framework of our international program "Gender Montage." The documentary collection "Gender Montage: Films from Post-Soviet Countries" aims to increase public awareness, promote tolerance, and develop partner ties between countries in the post-Soviet space. Practice has shown that the films are an effective means of explaining to all members of society what discrimination is all about, what women's NGOs do, etc.
  • In the framework of the national initiative "2006: The Year of Philanthropy," we initiated the project "Creation of a Favorable Environment for the Development of Philanthropy in the Moscow Region" in order to test technologies for creating local community foundations at women's NGOs. The implementation of the project allowed us to make a practical study of mechanisms for attracting resources for territorial development, to set up partnership ties with other local community foundations, to analyze the reasons why Russian business does not support social and human rights initiatives, and to promote the creation of a local community foundation at our partner organization Stimula Women's Information Center in Dubna.
  • In the fall of 2006, the Ministry of Public Health and Social Development of the Russian Federation commissioned our foundation at our initiative to implement the R&D project "Elaborating Recommendations for Improving Legal, Financial, and Economic Mechanisms for Assuring Full and Timely Child Support Payments." This allowed us to draw attention in a well-argued fashion to the rights of divorced women with children. Our study shows that approx. 4.5 million children are being brought up in single-mother families today. In 2006 alone, 2 million child-support complaints were submitted to the Federal Bailiff Service. What further steps can women take to defend their rights and the rights of their children? Today, the state does nothing about this. It is therefore an area of work for women's NGOs.
